How Verses to Remember Works

A SCRIPTURE MEMORY PROGRAM

V2R will need to be the primary scripture memory program. Your church can engage in any number of years as a cycle. Once that number of years in the cycle is completed, your church is encouraged to commence the cycle again – keeping the routine of Scripture memory going in your church. A 5-year minimum cycle is recommended though a 6th year is being offered.

Should you choose 5 years as your cycle, this would mean that 60 passages of Scripture would be learned over that 5 year period.

Once the cycle is completed, the cycle should start all over again.

The passages chosen have been carefully selected and will cover all major themes of the entire Bible including:

   A. The Character of God
   B. Salvation
   C. Fellowship & Brotherly Love
   D. Doctrine
   E. The Commandments
   F. Mercy, Grace, Faith, Humility, and Forgiveness
   G. Discipline
   H. Godly Living

The above list of topics is not exhaustive.

The 5-7 minute time segment will focus on one passage for the entire month. There will also be the recitation of the passages learned in two prior months. When we move to the following month, we will drop the recitation of the oldest passage from the routine, and retain the one just learned, and the one prior to that. For example, and assuming that we are in the 3rd month, the following will occur:

  • The 3rd passage in the sequence will be the focus for memorization.
  • The 1st and 2nd passages would be recited, hopefully from memory but still with the on screen aid as necessary.

Once we move to the 4th month

  • The 4th passage in the sequence will be the focus for memorization.
  • The 2nd and 3rd passages would be recited, hopefully from memory but still with the on screen aid as necessary.

So at all times, 3 sets of passages will be in the routine.

LEARN MORE

If done properly and with enthusiasm, the response of your church will surprise you. It is important that V2R not come across as strict or militant, but rather as an active part of our worship. Willing participation is what is being sought after. The presenter must be constantly encouraging those in your fellowship to make the effort.

Even the casual participants will benefit from V2R just by being present.

Each passage, therefore, will get twelve weeks of exposure: four weeks of focused memorization, followed by eight weeks of recitation.

Pastors and Teachers will have the added benefit of using these same memorized passages while they preach or teach. It is so much easier to counsel those who have already committed some Scripture to memory. With one passage being learned each month, this will have a 4-5 year cycle, when the program starts over again. Assuming that a particular person remained in the church for the entire cycle, that person would now be able to recite 48-60 passages from memory and be so much better equipped.

Despite the fact that churches fluctuate in numbers due to new converts, increased membership, marriage, migration, and the like, it is not recommended to have a cycle longer than 6 years. The 5 year cycle is recommended. Should any church engage in this memorization program, a person who would have attended for 5 consecutive years would have gone through the entire cycle.  Any person attending for 10 years would have done it twice.
